The PAPA Project was well represented at the recent meetings of the European Congress of Sport Science (ECSS), medical Barcelona, 26-29 June 2013.
The European College of Sport Science (ECSS) is the leading association of sport scientists at the European level and maintains extensive co-operations with corresponding non-European associations (such as ACSM). The purpose of the ECSS is the promotion of science and research, with special attention to sport science across Europe and beyond. The Congress has over 2600 members representing more than 70 countries around the world. There were more than 3100 participants in this year’s meetings in Barcelona.
The project had its own invited symposium, “Implementation and impact of the Empowering Coaching programme in promoting children's active and healthy engagement in sport: Findings from the PAPA main trial" which included presentations from members of the project from across the consortium. PAPA members also made other project-related presentations throughout the conference programme.
Moreover, research emanating from the PAPA project also featured predominantly in the annual Young Investigator Award (YIA) competition at this conference. There were more than 500 entrants to this year’s YIA Competition. Evaluation by the 22 members of the multi-disciplinary Scientific Board and Scientific Committee (all internationally leading Professors in their respective sub-disciplines within the sport and exercise sciences) brought this number down to 85 contestants for the oral presentation component of the competition. A subsequent rigorous evaluation process led to the naming of the 4 finalists, who were invited to present their work again on Saturday and answer questions posed by a member of the Scientific Committee in front of an audience of over 1000 conference attendees.
We are very proud to announce that Nathan Smith, a valued member of our ‘UoB PAPA Team’, was the recipient of the 1st Place prize! Nathan’s presentation was titled “The relationship between the objectively rated coach-created motivational climate and athletes’ basic psychological needs and sport enjoyment”.
